College projects

Motion Module:

Projection Mapping:

For this project I decided to choose the Arctic topic as it is something I am interested in. I wanted to focus on the fact that the Arctic is a fragile place and climate change is causing ice caps to melt helping to raise sea levels.

My idea was to abstractly and simply show ice bergs melting by using layers of squares to represent ice. In my first experiment I used blue squares to show the ice and as they faded away a blue line moves up  which represents the rising sea level. This motion is set within a circle with a map showing the  arctic. In my draft which you can see below I put on where the Arctic Circle is, the writing spins. I did this before I decided to add more text.

For my final design I changed the blue squares to white as the blue didn't represent the idea of ice well enough. I added some of the given text which explains the issue that arctic ice is melting. The effect used on the text 'Arctic ice is melting' is meant to give the impression that the words formed out of steam- because of the warming climate melting the ice. The font used is is 'Heiti TC' I used this typeface because it is clean and delicate looking, much like ice. I found a better image of the world (looking down on the arctic) as again the colours didn't represent the arctic well enough. I tested my motion graphics in modul8 and found that I needed to darken the background so the white squares and white text could be seen. I also added a shadow to the text to make it stand out more.

Teaser trailer:

I decided to produce a trailer for the Lion King over all the other genre choices as I particularly like the Lion King and because I don't often do projects where the audience is children. Often my audience is adults so designing with children in mind was challenging although it wasn't to hard to find my inner child as I began researching.

1.
2.

These are 2 experiments I've played around with for my teaser trailer. For my final one I want it to be a mix between the two. I like the composition of the first one but as the project is meant to be mainly typographic I think  I need to put some more words or lyrics from the film in. However the song (Circle of Life) playing is one that most people will know. It is also a subtle feature in explaining the film as some of the characters mention 'the circle of life' in the film. This would only be known once you've watched the film. I downloaded the font used for the 'Lion King' title as it is a bold font which is unique to the film.

For the second experiment i'm happy with how it turned out but I needed to think more about where the type would spin or move too. As I added more type it was hard to think about where the other text would go for everything to fit in. I chose to do kinetic type for this particular song as it is fun and emphasis the film title. I edited the song in Garage band to mesh the key verses together to shorten the trailer to the 15 second limit. It was hard to get the verses to flow smoothly together because of the change in the tune at each verse.

1.1

After having a tutorial it was pointed out that the first trailer needed more elements to help the audience get a better feeling of the film. To do this I added a texture which mimics the sandy and dry lands of Africa where the film is set. I also added the line 'Join Simba on his journey to become King'. This gives the audience another clue to what the film is about, you are following the journey of the main character.

The motion of the trailer is fairly slow and I decided this wasn't suited to the audience, who would mainly be children. It also didn't get across the element of fun and laughter which is in the film. I then began to develop my second trailer further (2).

2.1

Using the same song 'I just can't wait to be king', I re-positioned where the text would move too, as well as some of the effects to the text. On the version above the timing of the text appearing with the song is slightly fast, this is something I have addressed for my final trailer. I am happier with this trailer as it is suited to the audience, the song is fun and it means the children could sing along. I also changed the font from the 'Lionking' font to 'HeadLineA'. This was because the Lion King font looked too formal. Originally I looked at using the 'Block' font which looks like the text has been written in stone as it has rough edges. However, I couldn't get this font free so i settled with 'HeadLineA'. It is very legible and not as formal.  For my final trailer I have added the texture I used for trailer 1.1 to give a warmer feeling, and again giving further suggestion to what the film is like.

I showed my final trailer to my god children as well as my friends nephews (ages 4-8) and they all smiled when they saw it. I would say that is a success! One of them particularly liked the effect on the words 'Lion', they said it looked hairy!

Above is just an experiment looking at using 3D space and reflections.

Esting

Above is the first bit of motion graphics I have done in Apple Motion. It was done in the first induction and originally had audio (Speech from Iron Man) but the audio didn't transfer to my mac as it is only on the system at college. I found Motion challenging at first but since using it more I can't imagine using any other programme.

I had a lot of ideas which are shown in my sketch book however they were to complicated for me to turn into motion graphics. So I went for something simpler and just started playing around with the logo and the audio which I downloaded from E4. In the video below I have replicated the logo and made the  particles go bigger as the audio says 'E4', they then get smaller.

I then used a similar idea to the first except I added a different effect and made the particles go even smaller so they are basically illegible to the end. I also changed the angle of the camera to see what it would look like.

After playing around with the effects to the logo I then decided to take the logo into Photoshop and personify it by giving it basic arms and legs. I used a different audio file as the music fitted with how the animation jumps up and down.

I developed my personified logo further by adding a rabbit into the mix. I then gave the animation an ending by making the logo get struck by an arrow. As the audio ran longer then the animation I added the end scene, showing the still logo. For humour I added the text 'No rabbits were harmed in the making of this video'. I think the randomness of this animation fits well with the E4 brand.

Art 360- 'Pop it up' shop.

One of our briefs was to make products to sell at a pop up shop in Hereford. We had to organise and market the event as well as make our own work to sell. The shop was a success and we received great feedback from customers. We are hoping to organise another pop up shop in Hereford around Christmas.

Here are some of the products I made. I decide to make greeting cards as the cost is lower and through research I felt that greeting cards sell well. Especially for a pop up shop where people aren't looking to spend a lot of money.

'Day of the Dead' skull design. This is a pack of 4 skull design. Each card has a different colour skull on it.  I took inspiration from existing designs and patterns to create my own skull design in Illustrator. I enjoyed designing this product very much as it gave me a chance to get to know Illustrator better.

'Kingfisher' greeting cards. I photographed the Kingfisher myself during my time in South Africa. I decided to make a greeting card using the photograph as I thought it would appeal to the audience coming into the shop.

'Ice' greeting cards. My own photography which again I used as a greeting card to appeal to the audience.

'Animal print' greeting cards. Using my own photography of the animals I simply took the print of the animal to make up its outline. I used black and red as I enjoy using those colours in my work. I enjoyed making these as it gave me the freedom to design them how I wanted. For these particular cards I didn't have an audience in mind, I simply made them for myself.

This how my work was presented in the shop.
